Most of us have experienced the dreaded frizz at some point. Whether it’s the weather, heat styling, hair damage, dryness or simply your age, there are numerous reasons why you might be getting a visit from the frizz fairy.
But never fear – whatever’s causing your hair to frizz, there’s always a solution. We’ve put together our top expert tips for getting frizzy hair under control.
Choose your products wisely
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: great hair starts in the shower. So make sure you’re using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type.
Frizzy hair is often dry or damaged (or probably both). So you need a shampoo and conditioner combo that moisturizes and protects your strands. TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner are enriched with marula oil and keratin to repair damaged hair. They’re also packed with hair-smoothing benefits to minimize frizz, reduce tangles, add shine, calm flyaways and promote softness.
Skipping conditioner is a big no-no. You can get away with skipping shampoo for a few days, but using conditioner with every wash is key if you want to beat frizz. A good conditioner is one of the best ways to minimize frizz, by coating your strands with a protective layer for that soft, smooth result you’re looking for. TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Anti-Frizz Conditioner is an excellent choice for giving you up to 72 hours of frizz control.
Once you’re out of the shower, there are a few more products that can really help you tame frizzy hair quickly. First things first: a leave-in conditioner can boost the moisturizing and protecting process you started in the shower. TRESemmé Pro Pure Detangle & Smooth Leave-In Conditioner is specially formulated for dry hair. It’s lightweight and paraben-free, perfect for hydrating your strands without weighing down your style. Plus, it’s ideal for detangling.
Next up: serum. TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Hair Shine Anti-Frizz Serum is a bona fide frizzy hair miracle. Give your hair a few minutes after applying the leave-in conditioner to give it a chance to sink in, then rub a couple of pumps’ worth of serum between your palms and run through mid-lengths to ends for super-smooth results. And if you need a bit of extra frizz control in between washes, TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Hair Shine Anti-Frizz Serum can also be applied to dry hair
Dry your hair right
The best way to avoid summoning frizz when your hair’s wet is to treat it very gently. Use a towel with soft fibers, ideally a microfiber towel. Normal cotton towels cause friction when you rub your hair, causing frizz. In fact, you should avoid rubbing the hair altogether, and instead pat or stroke it gently from root to tip to prevent raising cuticles.
If you’re going to blow-dry or heat style your hair, you can’t be without heat protective spray. TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Anti-Frizz Heat Defense Spray shields your hair against the damaging effects of heat styling for smooth, frizz-free hair. Spray it through your hair (not forgetting the underneath layers) before blow-drying and heat styling to defend it against damage.
When blow-drying, avoid using the high heat setting. Instead, dry your hair using a medium heat, and when it’s nearly dry, switch to the cold setting to seal your hair cuticles and prevent frizzing. It may take a bit longer, but your hair will thank you, and will look much smoother as a result.
Another tip, while we’re on the subject of blow-drying, is to invest in an ionic blow-dryer. Normal blow-dryers just emit heat that causes the water in your hair to evaporate. But with that, it also strips it of its natural oils, leaving it – you guessed it – frizzy. An ionic blow-dryer, on the other hand, produces negative ions, which break down water molecules into smaller particles. These smaller particles coat each hair follicle and seal strands, barring any water from absorbing into the hair, which can dry it out more. And a bonus benefit of an ionic blow-dryer is that it cuts drying time in half.
Care for your hair overnight
When you sleep on a cotton pillowcase, your hair rubs against the fibers all night long. This friction causes damage to your hair cuticles and is a major cause of bed head – and, yes, frizz. The solution? A silk or satin pillowcase. As well as feeling pretty luxurious, it’s so much better for your hair and skin than cotton. Less friction equals less frizz, less damage, and smooth, shiny hair in the morning.
You can also try tying your hair up in a silk scarf, or braiding it, before you go to bed. Going to sleep with wet hair and letting it dry naturally overnight is also much better for it than a heat-intensive blow-dry.
Saying farewell to frizz is simple when you have the right products on hand, and you make a few small adjustments to your hair care routine. By following this expert advice, your hair will be soft as silk before you know it. You’re welcome.
